The [tentative debt ceiling] deal [between the White House and Republican leaders] represents the worst of conservative budget ideology; it cuts investments in workers and families, adds onerous and wasteful new hurdles for families in need of support, and protects the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations from paying their fair share in taxes.

Yes, it’s terrible, but failing to raise the debt ceiling in time would trigger economic disaster. Even the 14th amendment route, because of court challenges, would ruin investor confidence, and cause major damage. So corporate interests win again. The good news is that my retirement funds don’t evaporate right before I age out of private disability insurance, and my SSDI check will still arrive. Sometimes not a big loss is the closest we can get to a win.
ReplyDeleteI hope people remember what Republicans have done, flip the House back, and secure an outright Senate majority in ’24.
