Weekend in Northern Wisconsin

Above: Standing on the shores of frozen Trout Lake in northern Wisconsin, listening to the groaning of the ice. And, yes, it’s a very haunting sound.

I spent the weekend in northern Wisconsin with my friend Kate, staying in Land O’ Lakes, a town in north-central Vilas County along the border with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

It’s a very beautiful part of the world, even in the midst of an unseasonably warm winter. Kate told me that, normally, the ground and trees are completely covered in snow at this time of year. Well, as you can see, there definitely was ice around but very little snow.
