All Nations, All Faiths, One Prayer

Earlier today I participated in a ceremony to mark World Peace and Prayer Day.

Today, June 21, is of course Summer Solstice, a time believed by many indigenous peoples to be a powerful time to pray for peace and harmony among all living beings.

Accordingly, about forty people gathered at Coldwater Spring in South Minneapolis where we were led by members of the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Community in a traditional pipe ceremony.

I knew many of those gathered from my involvement in the Highway 55 struggle of 1998-99 (documented by my Faces of Resistance website, here).

Since 2006, the Wolakota Foundation has been encouraging people everywhere “to take time on June 21st and join in the united prayer/meditation to heal our Grandmother Earth.”

And that's exactly what we did today at beautiful Coldwater Spring.
