At the funeral of Dick Cheney [yesterday] there was no mention of the Iraq War. There was no mention of torture. There was no mention of the revolving door between the Bush administration and the fossil fuel industry. None.
That’s because the funerals of state officials serve one purpose: to whitewash history. They are attempting to use the death of an official to hammer home their version of history. One that paints them as noble statesmen and not war criminals.
It’s also an exercise in empire privilege. If the overseas victims of Cheney were allowed to speak, they would tell a different story. Our war criminal class doesn’t have to be on the other end of the imperialism they brought to the world.
