Butch Ware on Efforts by the Democratic Party to Block His Green Party Run for California Governor

Earlier today Butch Ware, Green Party candidate for Governor of California, spoke with Current Affairs Editor-in-Chief Nathan Robinson about his campaign to get on the ballot and what he describes as efforts by the Democratic Party to block third-party candidates.

Butch also shares his thoughts on the current surge in popularity and of electoral wins of the Green Party in the United Kingdom, and his views on abortion and trans rights, and his vision for California.

Republicans – Bush and Trump – try to steal electiona after they’re finished. The Democrats try to steal them before they take place by taking out candidates that actually threaten them. I spoke to Jill Stein about this and she said, “Butch, I’ve never ran for office since 2000 when the Dems didn’t either try and knock me out on some technicality or just sue directly to get me out of the election.”

They’re the anti-democratic party, and the reason why they do it is because in the last three years, nationwide, for elections at mayoral and lower levels, Green Party candidates have won 57% of the elections in which we have stood. So people say, where’s the Green Party between [presidential] elections? Well, we’re literally beating Team Blue and Team Red combined in [all those in-between] elections. [As a result] there are hundreds of Greens serving across the country. But when you get up to statewide elections for congress, senate, governor or president, the money and the lawsuits drown us out. [The Dems] turn on this fire hose of lawfare and of financial warfare.

The [Democratic establishment in California] knows that not only are we close to them in the polls but that every time there has been an actual candidate forum or debate in which I’ve been allowed to participate, I destroy them. So they’re doing everything they can to make sure that or few people know about me as possible.
