What Integrity Looks Like

I (mostly) agree with Qasim Rashid who said the following when sharing earlier today what I’m sharing this evening.

You absolutely should read Macklemore’s response to Robert Kraft forcing Ed Sheeran to cancel him. This is what integrity looks like. This is how you use your platform to stand up against Israel’s genocide in Palestine.

Here’s were I disagree with Rashid: Sheeran wasn’t forced to cancel Macklemore (pictured at right). He was pressured, and he caved.

Following (with added images and links) is Macklemore’s response to Robert Kraft, the billionaire and former Jeffrey Epstein associate who pressured Sheeran to dump Macklemore from his tour.

________________

I’m not sure how to start this. So I’m going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour.

But before I get into it, I want to say something that should be obvious. In this moment I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.

The victims are the Palestinian people. The men, women and children who have been killed, starved, displaced and forced to live through unimaginable violence. More than 20,000 children have been killed in Gaza alone. People are being killed today, and people will be killed tomorrow. I want to make sure that as I tell this story, we don’t lose sight of that.

Ed is my friend. I’ve known him for 13 years. We’ve shared late nights, studio sessions and stages. He has this infectious magic about him that I’ve grown to love. I consider him a brother. And because of that, we’ve had some difficult conversations this past week. The type of talks rooted in love and respect for one another that still end in a place of fundamental disagreement. Nothing I’m writing here is out of spite or because I want to tear down his character. But as I told Ed multiple times on the phone, our friendship can’t change my responsibility to tell the truth about what happened.

Last Monday, in the middle of all the media attention surrounding Pink and what I said at MetLife, Ed told me that Robert Kraft [right] called him. We were scheduled to play Gillette Stadium later this month, which is owned by the Kraft Group. Ed told me that Kraft said I would not be allowed to perform in his stadium. Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.

Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words “Free Palestine” and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn’t get past his public facing, “I don’t take sides.”

And I get why people don’t. Taking a side can cost you. Money, brand deals, sponsorships, festivals, private shows, relationships and access. I’ve lost all of those things. But there is no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed. When one side has the bombs and bottomless financial and military support from America, refusing to take a side doesn’t leave you in the middle.

What I said at MetLife I have been saying on stages around the world for almost three years. So why is it an issue now? Because now I’m sharing a stage with one of the biggest artists in the world, in some of the biggest stadiums in America. At a certain level of exposure, “Free Palestine” becomes too much of a risk. If I kept doing the shows, saying Free Palestine, with Ed implicitly supporting it, the crowd getting loud and showing undeniable support for Palestinian liberation, what artist might speak out next? The stage becomes resistance. Maybe that’s why this time it became so important to silence me.

And one of the most effective ways to enforce that silence has been to weaponize the accusation of antisemitism. Antisemitism is real. And that is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state. When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying “Free Palestine” gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn’t protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.

I hope this isn’t the end of my relationship with Ed. Thirteen years of friendship doesn’t disappear because of one painful disagreement. I hope we both continue listening, studying what is happening in Palestine and wrestling with what neutrality means in a moment like this. My door will always be open to continuing that conversation.

When my brother Omar was doing the subtitles for the video I posted from MetLife, I thanked him. He told me there’s a phrase in Arabic:

لا شكر على واج – “La shukra ala wajeb.” There is no thanks for a duty.

That stayed with me. Because that’s what this has become for me and millions of others around the world. A duty. Not something deserving of praise or gratitude. Not brave. Human.

Who is winning the internet, who is getting canceled, who gets to play the stadium and who doesn’t, all of it becomes so small when held against what we are actually witnessing in Gaza and the West Bank. An entire people being displaced, starved and killed while the world debates which words we are allowed to use to describe it, how those words make us feel, and whether our discomfort matters more than the people living through a genocide.

I didn’t need 10 shows from Ed. I needed 2. Two chances to stand in front of 90,000 people and say the words that somehow became too dangerous to say.

Free Palestine.

But if those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to Palestine, then it was the most successful tour I’ve ever been on.

The Rational National’s Take on U.K. Green Party’s “Brilliant” New Ad

The Rational National is a podcast created and hosted by David Doel that offers independent political commentary and corporate media criticism “with an occasional comedic tinge.” It’s one of the few podcasts I follow, primarily because it advocates in a calm and informed way for human rights, workers’ rights, and equality.

Recently, Doel shared his thoughts on “the brilliant new political ad from the U.K.’s Green Party with leader Zack Polanski.” In this 12-minute segment, Doel also examines the surge in popularity of the Greens in the “few short months since [Polanski’s] victory as leader.”

The Rational National’s Take on Zohran Mamdani

The Rational National is a podcast created and hosted by David Doel that offers independent political commentary and corporate media criticism “with an occasional comedic tinge.” It’s one of the few podcasts I follow, primarily because it advocates in a calm and informed way for human rights, workers’ rights, and equality.

Recently, Doel shared his thoughts on the recent victory of Zohran Mamdani (right) in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor. Mamdani identifies as a democratic socialist and, as Doel notes, this fact, along with Mamdani's authentically progressive agenda and popularity, has the political right in the U.S. – from the MAGA cult to “centrist” Democrats – experiencing an epic meltdown.

Progressive Perspectives on Marianne Williamson’s Presidential Run: “There’s No Downside to Her Doing This”

I have to say that The Humanist Report’s response to President Biden’s Press Secretary’s mocking of Marianne Williamson and her presidential candidacy is spot-on.

I also appreciate David Doel’s take on Marianne’s candidacy, a candidacy I wholeheartedly support. Observes Doel:

Marianne Williamson’s challenge of Joe Biden, if it’s properly covered by the media, has the potential to move the conversation during the Democratic primary; it could move Joe Biden to address many of the economic issues being addressed by Marianne Williamson. So regardless of what you think about Marianne, [her running for president] is a net positive; there’s no downside to her doing this.

Also worth a look-see is Kyle Kulinski’s critique of the members of the congressional progressive caucus and their support of Biden over the “thousand times” more progressive Marianne Williamson. (As one wit commented in response to Kulinski’s piece: “With progressives like these, who needs centrists?”)

The congressional progressive caucus are all in for Joe Biden. They know Marianne’s running; they know that what Marianne supports is much closer to what they say they support. But they’re all in for Joe Biden. . . . For the best of them, and I’m being so kind in saying this, the reason they support Biden is, We think he’s inevitable, we want to make some change in the direction that we prefer, and the way to do that is to play the game, back the guy who we know is going to win, and hope that [it will be a case of] I supported you so you’re now going to support me and some of the things I prefer. . . . None of them are acting from principle. If they claim that they’re in favor of [the range of progressive policies being championed by Marianne Williamson], if they claim those things and actually meant it, then the principled thing to do would be to say, Who’s close to my actual positions? Ah! It’s not even close! Marianne’s a thousand times closer to my actual positions. I’m going to support her. Not a single one of them is acting based on principle.

And finally, despite it being primarily a jaded hatchet-job, Nic Rowan’s March 9 Washington Examiner piece on Marianne can’t help acknowledging the political progressivism and inspiring humanity at the core of her presidential bid. Following are excerpts.

[Marianne Williamson] wants universal healthcare, free college and the cancellation of all existing student loan debt, a raft of family policies, a wealth tax, prohibitions on “dark money” in politics, and a transition to a green economy. These were certainly not Trump’s priorities. And while Biden may give lip service to some of them, Williamson sees him and other Democrats as limited by an “oligarchic system” in which “corporate profits take precedence over the good of the people [and the planet].” Her vision is different and, she says, untainted by the nihilism and cynicism that has marked Washington politics since World War II.

Williamson would know about cynicism since she is a Washingtonian herself. She moved to the city shortly after dropping out of the 2020 presidential race and became a fixture on the activist circuit. She told reporters that she was just keeping “an ear to the ground” and learning about the mechanics of politics in the Capital, but she was always preparing for another run.

. . . Insofar as Williamson does have a constituency, it has always been made up of people driven by conscience. . . . Williamson is one of these people herself. She was raised by parents who took public morality very seriously, to the point that her father once flew [the family] to Saigon to demonstrate the grave evil of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. When she was still beginning her career as a spiritual and self-help [teacher and author], she raised her profile in Los Angeles by giving speeches around the city to raise awareness about the AIDS crisis. And during the darkest moments of Bill Clinton’s presidency, she served as an adviser to Hillary Clinton, organizing retreats and counseling sessions for the beleaguered first lady.

In the past few years, as Williamson has become more enmeshed in Washington, she has grown beyond her old world. But her spiritually inflected self-help attitude still animates her approach to politics, often in ways that positively distinguish her from her rivals. Unlike most other professional politicians, Williamson’s posture is perfect, her skin luminous, and her suits well-brushed, never wrinkled. She does not sweat. She always stays on message and speaks from memory. (“Never, never a teleprompter,” a staffer told me.) When she wants to move through a crowd, it parts before her as if on command.

. . . “I am not naive about the forces that have no intention of allowing anyone into this conversation who does not align with their predetermined agenda,” she admits. Still, she begs her audience to “reject within ourselves the nihilism, reject within ourselves the cynicism, reject within ourselves the personal anger,” and march with her to battle the forces of injustice and, maybe, defeat them.
