Christopher Schoenherr on Marianne Williamson’s Politics of Love

“Not an escape from reality
[but] an attempt to look
at reality more honestly.”

At his substack Earth Drama, Christopher Schoenherr writes “essays decoding power, illusion, culture, politics, and the drama of being human.” Earlier today he wrote the following.

For years, Marianne Williamson has been mocked, dismissed, caricatured, and reduced to a collection of labels: crystal lady, orb queen, spiritual guru, New Age candidate. Her critics often assume that because she speaks about love, she must be speaking about something unserious.

But after reading her books Healing the Soul of America and A Politics of Love, I came away with a different conclusion. The most misunderstood thing about Marianne Williamson is not her spirituality. It is her definition of love.

Because in Williamson’s work, love is not an emotion.

It is a way of seeing.

A way of organizing society.

A way of deciding what matters.

A way of deciding who matters.

And ultimately, a way of deciding what civilization is for.

When Williamson talks about love, she is not talking about being nice.

She is not talking about avoiding conflict.

She is not talking about positive thinking.

She is not talking about pretending evil does not exist.

In fact, one of the most striking things about her work is how directly she confronts suffering.

She writes about poverty.

War.

Racism.

Corruption.

Child neglect.

Environmental destruction.

Corporate greed.

Democratic decline.

The politics of love is not an escape from reality.

It is an attempt to look at reality more honestly.

What she is really asking is a deceptively simple question:

What would society look like if human flourishing were the goal?

Not profit.

Not power.

Not partisan victory.

Not endless economic growth for its own sake.

Human flourishing.

The question sounds almost embarrassingly obvious.

Yet once you start asking it, everything changes.

Aligning With the Divine

The human will is a magic power.
When it is purified of selfish desire
and aligned with the Great Architect,
it becomes an unstoppable force of nature.

The will is the most misunderstood faculty in the human being.

In popular thinking, willpower is the capacity to force yourself to do things you do not want to do. To override the body, suppress impulse, push through resistance. This conception of will is not wrong, it is simply shallow. It describes the ego’s crude approximation of something that, in its true form, operates entirely differently.

The esoteric traditions drew a sharp distinction between personal will and what Franz Hartmann, following the Rosicrucian and Theosophical lineage, called alignment with the universal will. The personal will, driven by desire, fear, ambition, the need to prove something, is powerful in the short term and self-defeating in the long. It fights against the current of existence. It exhausts itself in the effort of control. The Bhagavad Gita described this as action bound to ego and result, the kind that generates karma rather than liberation.

What Hartmann was pointing toward was something the Hermetic tradition called theurgy, the alignment of the individual will with the divine intelligence that underlies all form. The Great Architect is not a God to be appeased. It is the ordering principle of the cosmos itself, the logos, what the Stoics called the rational fire running through all things. To align with it is not submission. It is the recognition that the deepest current of your own nature and the current of the universe are not separate.

The alchemical process begins with the purification of the base material. In the work of the will, the base material is selfish desire, not desire itself, which is a form of life-force, but desire contracted around the small self. Calcination burns this away. What remains is will in its pure form: intentional, clear, undivided, moving without friction because it no longer moves against anything.

Jung described the individuation process as the ego learning to serve the Self rather than rule it. The will that has undergone this transformation does not push. It draws.

Why A Course in Miracles Is Not “New Age”

When many people think of “new age” they think of crystals and purple decals and ceremic angels in people’s windows and a kind of fuzzy thinking – which is abhorrent to a serious person. Fuzzy thinking is, after all, just one step above not thinking at all. But to take the ideas of serious transformational thinkers and philosophers and throw the “new age” label at them is also abhorrent. I feel that the term “new age” is used by bascically hostile media to diminish and marginalize a conversation that is very significant.

This month sees the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of A Course in Miracles, a self-study program in spiritual psychotherapy that many people have experienced as deeply meaningful and transformative.

As a student of the Course, I find the words of Alan Braswell to be very informative and insightful, especially as I’m aware that the Course is often maligned and dismissed by some as “new age.”

Braswell, drawing on the insights of Kenneth Wapnick, challenges such notions in the following post that he originally shared with the Facebook group Let’s Discuss A Course in Miracles.

There is a fairly common misconception floating around that A Course in Miracles is “New Age.” I’ve encountered this misconception countless times over the years, and was recently reminded of this fallacy - which suggested to me that posting [the following] from a letter that Kenneth Wapnick wrote to the Library of Congress on the subject might be helpful.

Ken [who was a clinical psychologist and one of the foremost teachers of A Course in Miracles] maintained over the years of teaching the Course that it is not a New Age spirituality but rather has its intellectual roots in much earlier intellectual traditions, including the teachings of Plato, Neoplatonism, and the higher teachings of Gnosticism.

The following are excerpts from a letter Kenneth sent to the Library of Congress sometime in the 1990’s, requesting that they no longer classify the Course and Kenneth’s books under the category New Age. Kenneth’s efforts were successful.

Here are excerpts from Ken’s letter:

A Course in Miracles in many crucial ways is in sharp disagreement with New Age thinking, with many principles discussed in the book conflicting with many New Age principles. Five examples of this kind of conflict are as follows:

1) The theory of A Course in Miracles is based on a non-dualistic metaphysics; it teaches that the physical universe (including the body) was not created by God, and in fact, came about as an attack on God. No New Age system would support this; they all teach just the opposite.

2) A Course in Miracles does not support the thinking involved in “prosperity consciousness,” a prominent principle in New Age thought systems.

3) In almost all New Age systems there is an overriding emphasis on people’s positive experiences, with scant lip service paid to the overwhelming unconscious feelings of guilt shared by most people. A Course in Miracles teaches that there is only one problem in the world, and that is guilt. Therefore, it focuses primarily on our feelings of guilt, teaching us how to identify them and undo them.

4) Another theme common to many New Age systems is the belief that we are God. A Course in Miracles is emphatic in teaching that we are not God; it teaches that God is our Source – we have been created by Him.

5) On a more general level, A Course in Miracles is distinguished from New Age thought systems in that it draws upon traditional Freudian psychoanalytic principles (e.g., denial and projection), and, within philosophical and spiritual contexts, upon the Neoplatonic tradition and themes common to early Christianity and the Gnostic systems of the second and third centuries. My book, Love Does Not Condemn: The World, the Flesh, and the Devil According to Platonism, Christianity, Gnosticism, and A Course in Miracles, provides an in-depth exploration of these themes. Chapter 19 is especially helpful in understanding these conflicts.

The Resurrection of Jesus: “An Archetypal Map of Transformation”

As [we] embrace the Easter holidays, [let us] focus today on the sacred process encoded within the human journey, one that transcends religion and speaks directly to the architecture of the soul. The resurrection story of Jesus is not merely a historical or theological event: it is an archetypal map of transformation. It reveals the pathway through which the human being sheds the density of the lower nature and awakens its innate divinity.

Your lower nature is not “bad,” but it is limited. It is conditioned by fear, attachment, illusion, and the perceptual constraints imposed by the space-time matrix. These veils are powerful, designed to immerse consciousness fully into the human experience. Yet they also obscure your true essence: your eternal, multi-dimensional self.

The resurrection begins when the false self is allowed to die. This death is symbolic, yet deeply real. It is the surrender of identities, wounds, karmic imprints, and inherited belief systems that keep you bound to limitations. It is the willingness to release control and step beyond the known to embrace the unknown, even when the ego resists. In this surrender, something ancient within you begins to stir. Your true self has never been lost: only dormant.

It waits beneath layers of self-forgetfulness, beneath the noise of the conditioned mind. When the lower self dissolves, the soul rises. This is the resurrection: the re-emergence of your divine nature into conscious awareness. It is not granted from outside but activated from within. To embody Christ Consciousness is to live as this awakened self.

It is to perceive beyond separation, to act from unity, and to anchor higher intelligence into physical reality. In this state, you are no longer confined by the illusions of space-time, rather, you become a bridge between dimensions, a living expression of the Infinite Spirit beyond creation.

Christ Consciousness: The Inner Flame of Divine Self

I share something very special today for Easter Sunday – a powerful and liberating reminder of the true meaning of “the Christ.”

First shared by Beau Childs on Facebook, this “reminder” was written by Lizz Marion and reflects the ancient mystical understanding and experience of the Christ. It’s a timely reminder, too; what with the rise in the U.S. of Christian nationalism, the antithesis of the Christ.

Christ Consciousness is not about a man nailed to a cross two thousand years ago. It is not a historical story frozen in time. It is a living metaphor – a profound symbol of our own divine awakening.

The “Christ” is not just Jesus of Nazareth; the Christ is you, when you remember who you are beneath the layers of illusion, fear, and separation. It is not about belief in a savior – it is the embodiment of your own sacred essence.

Christ Consciousness is the divine frequency encoded in every soul, waiting to be remembered, reclaimed, and lived.

The Christ as a Metaphor

When people speak of Christ, they often speak of a person. But in deeper spiritual truth, Christ is not a person – it is a state of being. It is the radiant, awakened consciousness that transcends ego, duality, and suffering.

Jesus embodied this state and taught from it. But his life was not meant to place him above humanity – it was meant to reflect what is possible within humanity. He said, “Greater works than these shall you do,” pointing not to worship, but to inner transformation.

The crucifixion and resurrection are not just events – they are symbolic of our own journey. The ego must be crucified for the true Self to rise. This is the death of the false self and the birth of divine remembrance. Christ Consciousness is not external; it is the inner flame that burns quietly within all of us, waiting for the breath of awareness to ignite it.

The Divine Birthright

Every soul comes into this world carrying the divine blueprint. That blueprint is the Christ principle – the inner compass aligned with truth, love, and unity. It is not given to a chosen few. It is not earned. It is inherent. It is our birthright. But the world teaches us to forget, to separate, to look outward for what can only be found inward. We are told to seek the light, not realizing we are the light.

To awaken Christ Consciousness is to remember that you are not your trauma, not your name, not your identity or history.

You are consciousness itself – eternal, unbroken, divine. Christ Consciousness dissolves all illusions of hierarchy, worthiness, or spiritual distance. It brings us into oneness, where we see that every being is a mirror of the same light.

Beyond Religion and Dogma

This understanding goes beyond the boundaries of religion. Christ Consciousness is not Christian – it is cosmic.

It is the same truth spoken through different tongues: Buddhahood, Krishna consciousness, the I AM Presence, the Higher Self. The language may vary, but the essence is one. Religions point to it, but the direct experience of it comes only when you go within.

It is felt in moments of deep peace, unconditional love, and timeless presence. It is lived when compassion overrides judgment, when forgiveness flows freely, and when truth is chosen over comfort. This is not theology. It is spiritual embodiment.

Living the Christ Within

To live from Christ Consciousness is to remember that all life is sacred. It is to walk with the awareness that every thought, every word, every act carries the vibration of your state of being. It is not about being perfect – it is about being present, open-hearted, and aligned with your soul.

You begin to see through the eyes of love, hear with the ears of compassion, and speak from the voice of truth. You become the bridge between heaven and earth – not because you’ve attained something, but because you’ve remembered what you already are.

Christ Consciousness is not the story of one man. It is the invitation for every human being to awaken the Christ within. It is the divine spark that whispers, “You are not separate. You were never less. You are the living presence of the sacred.” It is the journey from illusion to truth, from fear to love, from ego to soul.

This is not a message of exclusion – it is a call to remembrance. You are not meant to worship Christ – you are meant to become it.

Butch Ware: “People Really Want New Options in Politics”

Green Party candidate for California Governor, Butch Ware, was recently a guest on Travis Smiley’s podcast.

Right: Butch Ware, his mother Christine, and Travis Smiley. Christine is a friend of mine and fellow consociate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet – St. Paul.

During their conversation Butch discusses the record low approval for Democrats and Republicans, and makes the case for an independent, non-corporate politics as the way forward in the Golden State and ultimately the nation.

Following is an 8-minute clip from Travis Smiley’s conversation with Butch Ware.

Says Butch Ware about the “real crisis in the political status quo” . . .

Both [major corporate-backed] parties are at record low approval rates right now. And it just shows that there’s a real crisis in the political status quo. So there's definitely an opportunity for somebody that’s coming from outside the system to make a difference and an impact in this moment.

Forty percent of American voters identify themselves as independents. Only 30% identify as Democrat; 25% identify as Republican. And when you poll registered Democrats, 53% of them say both parties do such a “poor job” that we need an independent third party. Forty-eight percent of Republicans say the same thing, and 70% of independents say this as well.

So the reality is that the talking points in the corporate-controlled media are going to be about blue various red. But on the ground, people are fed-up with Team Blue Genocide and Team Red Fascism because they both work for the same corporations, and people really want new options in politics.

[Independents parties have a hard time getting established] because we’re competing uphill against people that are swimming in blood money. Kamala Harris was able to spend $1.5 billion whereas we [the Jill Stein / Butch Ware Green Party presidential ticket] were being outspent a thousand to one. So they control most of the media outlets and are able to shape the conversation in significant ways.

But I will say this: a Green Party candidate almost ended Gavin Newsome’s political career before it started. Matt Gonzalez got 47% of the vote for mayor in San Francisco despite the fact that he was outspent 30 to 1. And right now, we just had polling come out that shows that I’m running even with a bunch of establishment Democratic candidates and ahead of some of the other Democrat candidates despite the fact that we’re being massively outspent. [And that’s] because we’re doing the work on the ground and we’re responding to this moment by not doing a fake culture war between, you know, so-called left and so-called right, and instead focusing on universal single-payer healthcare, affordable housing, taxing the billionaires, and taking the pressure off of working class families in the state of California. And everywhere I go, up and doen this state, people are responding to that message. And now we’re starting to see it reflected in the polls as well.

Butch is opposed to Prop 50 (a Democratic measure to counter Republican gerrymandering in California), saying . . .

[Activist and revolutionary socialist] Fred Hampton said it best. He said we don’t believe you fight fire with fire best, we believe you fight fire with water best. You do not fight disenfranchisement with disenfranchisement. You fight it with ranked choice voting, multi-member districts, and proportional representation. And the Democrats have fought those things tooth and nail, the same way that the Republicans have because their goal is not actually to restore democracy to the people. Their goal is to consolidate their own power. And they don’t want things that make the political process more open because as soon as you [embrace] proportional representation then winner-takes-all is out of the equation and they can no longer do the “lesser of two evils” argument; thety can no longer be a corporate party that is just a little to the left of the Republicans and then say, “Well, you can’t vote for those [third party] guys” because [with proportional representation] you can actually vote your conscience and make sound choices.

Derek Penwell’s Message to Those Waking Up to Consequences They Didn’t Think Had Their Name on Them

The following is written by Derek Penwell, Senior Minister at Douglass Blvd Christian Church. It’s an open letter that Penwell first shared this piece on his substack, Heretic Adjacent, and then on Facebook, where I came across it.

On one level, this piece is for all of us living in the U.S. at this profoundly troubling time – something especially felt through Penwell’s call for each one of us to “be gentle and brave.” Yet at the same time and in particular, Penwell is imparting a very direct message to those “waking up to consequences they thought had someone else’s name on them.”

Friends,

Christmas is over now.

The music has faded, the manger scenes are being boxed up, and the country is stumbling back into ordinary time with a hangover nobody planned for. For some of you, that hangover isn’t just emotional. It’s the price of utilities. It’s the cost of medication your insurance no longer covers. It’s the neighbor who didn’t come home from work last week because ICE got there first. It’s the small business bleeding out because tariffs turned your supply chain into a hostage situation.

You’re waking up to consequences you didn’t think had your name on them.

You were told this would hurt “those” people. You know, the immigrants. The “illegals.” The queer kids who needed to be put back in their place. The women who wanted too much. The professors and librarians and “elites” who supposedly looked down on you. The cities. The coasts. The people who didn’t go to your church or vote like your family.

They told you the damage would be targeted, efficient, deserved.

You believed the suffering would be contained to people who had it coming.

And now you’re realizing it isn’t contained at all . . . unless, of course, you’ve got a couple billion you dropped in the couch cushions.

I want to say this carefully.

I’m not interested in gloating. Schadenfreude is cheap, and it rots the soul. I’m not going to mock your fear or dismiss your anger or tell you that you deserve everything you’re facing. Pain is pain. Fear is fear. Losing your footing in a system you trusted is genuinely destabilizing, regardless of who you are and whose team colors you’re wearing.

But I’m also not going to lie to you.

This. All this stuff unleashed on the world, it didn’t come out of nowhere.

But you’re in good company. The ground you’re standing on now is the same ground others have been standing on for a long time. Immigrant families have been holding their breath at every traffic stop for years. Queer teenagers have been calculating which parts of themselves to hide since middle school. Black parents have been having “the talk” about police encounters for generations. Disabled people have been fighting for scraps of a healthcare system that treats them like a budget problem. Women have been watching their bodies become legislative territory long before you noticed the court was stacked.

People told you what would happen. They tried to warn you. Some of you called them hysterical. Some of you called them divisive, said they were exaggerating, playing victim, making everything political.

Now you know, they weren’t just pushing leftover liberal talking points.

Here’s the hard truth most people never want to hear: cruelty never stays loyal. It doesn’t honor its contracts or keep its promises about who it will and won’t harm. It always widens its focus, looking for new bodies. So, eventually, it always finds its way home.

That’s not me being punitive. That’s me describing social/political/economic gravity.

The prophet Amos saw it clearly. “Let justice roll down like waters,” he thundered. But he also warned about what happens when it doesn’t. When we deny justice to the poor at the gate, when we trample the needy and push aside the afflicted, the whole vineyard withers. Not just their part of the vineyard. The whole damn vineyard. Because injustice isn’t a precision instrument. It’s poison dumped in the water table.

I get that some of you are angry right now. You feel betrayed by folks you thought cared about people like you, when it turns out they didn’t. And it makes sense. You were promised protection, told that their accumulation of strength meant someone else would absorb the pain. They sold you a story where order could be restored by sacrificing the right people.

But here’s the part of the story left out: once you decide some lives are expendable, you’ve already agreed that all lives are conditional. Including you, your kids, and your sweet aunt Mable, who never did anything wrong to anybody. Nobody’s safe.

I need to say something else, and I’m going to say it in as gentle a way as I know how:

Your pain doesn’t erase your participation.

You don’t get to pretend you were merely an observer because the outcome wound up surprising you. Advocacy for cruelty still counts, even if the blast radius expanded farther than you anticipated.

The ballot you cast, the policy you defended (or ignored), the joke you laughed at, the cruelty you explained away because it was pointed at someone you’d been taught doesn’t require your respect: all of it still happened. And me saying that isn’t an attack. It’s the beginning of honesty.

And honesty is the only place repentance can actually start.

The biblical word for repentance is metanoia. It doesn’t mean feeling really bad. It doesn’t mean groveling or self-flagellation. It means a complete reorientation, a turning around so thorough that you end up walking in the opposite direction. It means telling the truth about what you were willing to tolerate as long as it didn’t cost you too much. It means resisting the urge to rewrite your own history now that that history’s become a sore spot.

Repentance also means this: none of us gets to skip to the reconciliation scene without passing through accountability first. You don’t get to show up in the communities where your people lit a match and expect a hero’s welcome for finally noticing the fire. The people who’ve been burning this whole time don’t owe you cookies for showing up with a bucket.

But here’s the good news, if you're still here and you’re still willing to hear it.

This moment doesn’t have to harden you.

It can either calcify into resentment, a new grievance that finds new scapegoats, or it can crack open into something braver: solidarity that isn’t transactional. A refusal to build safety on somebody else’s suffering. A recognition that none of us gets to choose whose dignity counts without eventually paying for that choice.

If you want a bridge forward, it won’t be built out of denial. It will be built out of shared vulnerability and changed allegiance—not to a man or a party. And certainly not to the illusion that we can manage cruelty without becoming its collateral damage.

So what does that look like, practically?

I think it looks like showing up at a school board meeting to defend the teacher you once side-eyed for having a Pride flag in her classroom.

It looks like calling your congressman about ICE enforcement in your community, even though your family doesn’t have to worry about that . . . yet.

It looks like telling your uncle at the next holiday dinner that you were wrong, actually, and you’re not going to laugh at those jokes anymore.

It looks like giving money to the bail fund, the immigrant legal defense organization, and the clinic that’s still open.

It looks like saying out loud, in rooms where it costs you something: “I helped make this. And I’m done.”

After Christmas, the story Christians tell is no longer about cherubic angels and shepherds in bathrobes, but about a child who grows up under military occupation, who tells the truth about power until power does him to death, and who even on the cross refuses to call down the legions that could save him. The God we meet in Jesus doesn’t secure safety through domination. That God absorbs the violence of empire and breaks its power by refusing to return it.

That story is still on the table.

But it asks something of us.

It asks us to stop calculating who deserves protection and start practicing it as if everyone does . . . because they do.

This story challenges us to stop confusing our anger with innocence. To let this moment teach us what it’s been trying to teach us all along: that the only future worth having is one where nobody’s disposable.

I know it’s difficult. But if you’re willing to begin there, you won’t be alone. There are communities already doing this work, already practicing the politics of the Beatitudes instead of the culture war. And they’ve been at this for a while. They’ll make room for you. But you’ll need to come ready to listen more than you speak. Ready to follow instead of lead. Ready to sit with the discomfort of being the newcomer in a struggle others have been waging for years.

That will cost you something.

That’s how you’ll know it’s real.

Be gentle and brave.

Christmas Eve Musings

In the late evening hours of Christmas Eve, I finally put up my Christmas tree! Honestly, I thought I’d skip it this year. 😟

Seriously, with everything going on in the world at this time, including right here in my city and neighborhood, I just wasn’t feeling any Christmas “cheer.”

So I decided to focus instead on the Christmas spirit and its call to be a light in the darkness; to birth, in other words, the Christic light of transformation in and through our lives. And what better symbol is there of this beautiful and transforming love-light than a well lit-up Christmas tree!?

And so here it is! . . . And may we all be open to being light-bearers this Christmas . . . and throughout the New Year. ☀️💗
