Yes, Just Imagine . . .

As a writer, Matthew Albracht deftly explores the intersections of personal growth, collective healing, and systemic change. Recently, he shared a piece on his substack that begins by acknowledging that “What’s happening in our nation today feels quite like a dream.” . . . A bad dream that’s actually “all too real” as we watch “democratic institutions and norms crumble before [our] eyes, and critical government agencies . . . severely gutted and even eliminated.”

Yet as Albracht reminds us, it didn’t have to be this way.

Indeed, we could instead be “witnessing a radical strengthening of democracy and society, prioritizing healing instead of harming – beyond what we had ever dared to imagine, or maybe even knew was possible.”

We could, in other words, have a progressive Democratic administration led by President Marianne Williamson, rather than an increasingly fascist Republican regime led by Donald Trump and his “minders” Stephen Miller and Russ Vought.

Imagine . . .

A presidency that provides moral clarity in ways we haven’t seen before. Untethered to calcified norms and big-moneyed influence, it looks right into the heart and soul of the human experience.

It is tackling root causes, not just symptoms. Instead of gutting health and science agencies while paying lip service to “making America healthy again,” we are implementing a Universal Coverage healthcare system focused on preventing chronic illness rather than just treating symptoms. Working to empower real, deep and lasting health on every front possible.

. . . Imagine a president working to fortify democratic stability rather than tear it down. Someone pushing for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, among other critical measures, to secure a thriving democratic society. Someone willing to finally rein in our increasingly concentrated cohort of corporate/mega wealthy overlords, instead of empowering them further.

Someone who stood firmly against the neoliberal tide – the whole corrosive system of deregulation, privatization, corporate capture, corporate lobbyists acting as policy-makers, and the quarterly-profit-obsessed market straightjacket that treats money as supreme over human values – that has hollowed out democracy’s promises over the decades. And someone who resisted the newer authoritarian impulse to silence dissent and punish free expression, which threatens to shatter what remains.

Rather than economic chaos driven by reckless executive orders and wildly erratic tariffs, we see strategic investments in policies that lift everyone up – securing funding for the foundations of a flourishing economy and culture: universal childcare, debt-free higher education, and renewable energy jobs that sustain both our people and our planet.

This didn’t have to be an imagination, it could have been reality. This administration could have been led by a President Marianne Williamson. That was actually her Democratic Presidential campaign platform, her vision, what she believed in with every fiber of her being and would have worked for.

What inspired me to write this whole piece was that I had an actual (and much sweeter) dream recently. In it, Marianne pulled through as the Dem candidate after Biden had come to his senses and withdrawn earlier in the primary. She won the primary and then handily defeated Trump. In my dream, I didn’t feel the slightest bit surprised, as she was speaking to something much deeper in the human experience . . . and that resonated with so many people who are tired of all the political games (and lies).

In my dream, I and others were helping her assemble an extraordinary, leading-edge cabinet. She was moving boldly forward on so many fronts, everything described above and much more – visionary shifts in how we organize society so that it serves everyone, heals what’s broken, and repairs what’s been ignored. I could viscerally feel the magic of what was happening in my bones. It felt inspiring, sweet and true.

When I woke from the dream that morning, into our current reality, the sweetness of course quickly evaporated. “Disheartened” doesn’t begin to capture how I felt. I’ve worked with Marianne Williamson for more than twenty-five years and served as a volunteer policy advisor on both her presidential campaigns. So when I dream of her winning, it isn’t just idle fantasy – it’s the sadness of knowing how much her vision could have offered, and how thoroughly it was mocked, dismissed, and iced out by the establishment. While she was dismissed by many as unqualified, what should be obvious now is that she had the most important qualification of all: the prescience to see what was coming, and the courage to name what would be required to prevent it.

She saw what so many in the establishment and media could not – or refused to – see: that Biden represented the same corporate-controlled politics people were exhausted by, and that Democrats weren’t speaking to those frustrations or acting on them. And she warned that Trump had gained not just political traction but a psycho-spiritual hold on millions of Americans. She knew his message, however false, resonated with people’s fears and frustrations. She saw it clearly, long before most were willing to admit his force hadn’t waned in comparison to the milquetoast candidacies of Biden (and later Harris).

Marianne often quotes Franklin Roosevelt, highlighting three lessons we would do well to remember today. First, his insistence that we need not fear fascism as long as democracy delivers on its promises – promises like universal healthcare and tuition-free higher education, which she warned we had failed to fulfill. Second, his reminder that “a necessitous man is not a free man” – a truth made vivid in our current age of deepening inequality and inequity. And third, his conviction that the most important job of the presidency is not administrative, but moral leadership itself. Marianne embodied that principle in ways that could have moved the needle had she not been sidelined.

Marianne Williamson: “My Gratitude Is as Deep as the Sea”

Progressive presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, who I've come to recognize as the Cassandra of U.S. politics, announced earlier today that she is exiting the Democratic presidential race.

Following (with added links) is Marianne’s statement about this decision that she shared this morning across her various social media platforms.

Saturday was the deadline for filing as a Democrat running against Kamala Harris for the nomination for President. We did everything possible to stand for a blitz primary, an open convention and so forth. Yet the way the rules were made there truly was no way, Kamala’s momentum was in full swing, and all we could have done is create noise.

As I’ve made clear from the beginning, I was in the race to create fundamental change, yes – but not as a chaos agent or metaphorical bomb thrower. Things being what they are – including the fact that defeating Donald Trump has always been and continues to be the goal that most matters – it was time to let go.

To those of you who have contributed to my campaign – as a voter, volunteer, or donor – I salute you and I thank you.

For years I’ve been intrigued by Gandhi’s message that “politics should be sacred.” On both my campaigns for President, I saw things that convinced me it could be that way: people entering the political conversation not only with their heads but with their hearts, not with anger but with love, willing to look beyond artificial divides, honoring the truths of our history, bringing the fullness of themselves to the process, and harnessing all those things for political purposes.

I saw it. I felt it. I know it’s possible.

Ultimately, of course, I did not build the campaign that could achieve it. Some of the responsibility for this lay with others; I never encountered the corruption and lack of ethics I saw lobbed against our campaign. But I take 100 percent responsibility for what we did and did not achieve; if I’d done this or not done that, been smarter here or savvier there, our ship still might have made it to harbor.

What matters most to me now, however, is not what we didn’t achieve but what we did achieve; and we achieved a lot. There were moments too numerous for me to describe where I know without a shadow of a doubt that we shed light in the darkness of confused minds, inspired hope in the spirit of hopeless citizens, and motivated people to get involved and stay involved until justice shall be done.

Staying involved is what I will do, and I’m sure you will as well. Anything we experience can be grist for the mill, and as we transition away from campaigning I will do everything possible to contribute as best I can to the emergence of a better world.

I believe most Americans feel as I do: that America can do better. And one day we will. We’re a nation in process, as we have always been. And while these are very turbulent times they are not without the seeds of a new beginning. Those seeds lay in our hearts, and they will bear fruit if we water and nourish them.

For those of you who are asking, “What should we do now?” the answer is to do whatever is in our hearts. What lies there is not mere symbolic victory. For myself, the more I read about former President Trump’s proposed policies, the more I hear his words and ponder them in my heart, the more I believe our most urgent task now is to make sure he does not return to the White House. That conviction is what will determine my vote on election day.

That which brings likeminded people together in service to a more beautiful world is a significant bond of affection. For the honor shown me this last year by voters, volunteers and donors, my gratitude is as deep as the sea.

I want to take this opportunity to extend my “deep as the sea” gratitude to Marianne. She and her presidential campaign inspired me in powerful ways – both politically and spiritually. It’s an inspiration that lives on.

I also want to to take this opportunity to reiterate my previous message of appreciation to Marianne.

Thank you, Marianne! . . . Thank you for all you’ve done in running for president. I trust you made a difference . . . and will continue to make a difference; it’s just who you are. You certainly continue to inform and inspire me.

Through your presence, words, and actions on the campaign trail, you not only advanced a much-needed progressive agenda but also embodied the shift in consciousness that I believe the Sacred is calling all of humanity to manifest in and through our individual and communal actions.

It’s a shift that invites all to consciously choose love over and above fear. You remind us, Marianne, that when such a choice is realized in our politics as well as in our individual lives, we will bring to birth in our world an era of justice, peace and healing.

So, again, thank you!

Marianne Williamson: “‘Vote Blue No Matter Who’ Is Not Enough to Win in November”

Thanks to my friend Ben, I was alerted this afternoon to progressive Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson’s appearance earlier today on ABC News Live.

As a supporter of Marianne’s candidacy, I’m very happy to see her being interviewed by a mainstream media outlet. It’s a solid 10-minute interview, one in which Marianne raises a number of informed and insightful points. I hope there will be many more appearances by this Cassandra of U.S. politics, as we sorely need her wisdom and clarity.

UPDATE: In addition to her appearance today on ABC News Live, Marianne was also a guest on Fox News’ Your World With Neil Cavuto. Following is the resulting 6-minute interview.

• I just signed a petition as a delegate for the DNC to nominate Marianne Williamson for President of the United States.

• So grateful to you, Marianne, for continuing to stand up for democracy and for the many people who are not being served by our corporatist government.

•She is right. Somebody needs to speak to what people are concerned about: healthcare, clean food and water, education, housing, fair wages, everyday concerns of the people.

• Marianne Williamson has vision, heart, and is incredibly articulate. No wonder the establishment doesn’t want her to be heard or debated!

• Marianne has never given up on democracy or the American people, despite being ignored and dismissed by the political elite. She is guided by higher principles than just the political theatre that is currently going on, and now I think her time has come. She has been proven right time and time again and is usually the first person to lay down her position on important issues while the others just sweep things under the rug. She has proven herself to be a committed, strong, intelligent, wise, determined, gracious, respectful, honourable, and compassionate person with the drive and courage to lead and restore a government that works for the PEOPLE.

• Is America ready for Marianne? I hope so. It would be really exiting to see what difference she would make.

On This Momentous Day in U.S. Politics, a Visit to the Prayer Tree

Earlier today United States President Joe Biden announced that he has exited the 2024 presidential race. Reports The Hill:

[Biden’s announcement marks] a stunning end to a 50-year-long political career that culminated in caving to pressure from fellow Democrats to end his bid for reelection, which never fully recovered from an abysmal debate performance on June 27. Biden, 81, announced Sunday he will no longer seek another four years in office after his physical and mental acuity were called into question following a prime-time debate in which he struggled to finish sentences, gave confused looks and fumbled through his answers.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted to social media. . . . He later endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the party’s nominee in November.

In the hours after Biden’s announcement, I noticed that a number of friends were posting memes on Facebook featuring a photograph of Harris with the words, “I’m with her,” as if she already had the nomination.

I felt compelled to respond to this meme by sharing the following:

I’m with whomever secures the nomination at the convention. I strongly believe that this is not the time to “anoint” or “coronate” one particular candidate. Let the democratic process play out, as messy and chaotic as it may initially be. I trust that the end result will be the strongest candidate to both defeat Trump and lead the country forward for the next four years.

I also felt people’s temperature rising (mine included) at the clear and rapid establishment of two camps – one that wishes just to allow Harris to become the nominee on the word of Biden and the fact that she’s the vice president, and another that sees an open, transparent, and democratic primary as being the way to discern the strongest candidate. Obviously, I’m in the second “camp.”

And so, it seems, is Vice President Harris. For later this afternoon she released a statement in which she said that she is looking forward to “earning and winning the nomination.” To my mind, this implies an open convention, perhaps even a blitz mini-primary, though, realistically, I fear the time for that may have past due to the dithering of Biden to step aside. Still, overall, I find her words heartening.

If there is an open convention I look forward to a range of Democratic candidates making their case for why they should be the nominee – among them my preferred candidate, the progressive Marianne Williamson, who released the following five-and-a-half-minute video earlier today.

I hope others also “throw their hat in the ring,” as they say, including Pete Buttigieg, Gretchen Witmer, Gavin Newsom, Stacey Abrams, Dean Phillps, Cory Booker, Andy Beshear and, of course, Kamala Harris. There is so much talent and leadership out there. I hope the Democratic National Convention is opened up so that such leadership can shine forth, inspiring not just Democrats but the American people at large.

This was my prayer at the Prayer Tree this afternoon. In particular, I really hope Marianne Williamson’s voice and message is included as she is the sole progressive candidate currently in the race. She (along with Rep. Dean Phillips) was treated atrociously during the Democratic primaries, if you could even call them that. Indeed, the idea that the 2024 primaries were in any way democratic is a joke and a sham. And the fact that so few don’t know this speaks to two things: (i) how well the DNC and its media lapdogs suppressed the democratic process, and (ii) how little attention most people pay to the shenanigans of the DNC. The oft-heard contention that Biden “won” the primaries as if they were a fair competition is proof of this.

And as my friend Ben says:

The DNC manipulated the process. Some state primaries were flat out cancelled, and there were lawsuits because of it. Biden didn’t participate in the two primary debates. CNN and MSNBC gave insignificant coverage to the primary. Shouldn’t Biden have been focusing on energizing the 2020 coalition that got him elected? And if he was afraid to debate his Democratic opponents, maybe he shouldn’t even have been a candidate. There were some really stupid decisions that got us here, and they should be revisted.

Well, hopefully at the Democrats’ open convention in Chicago next month, things will not only be revisted but rectified, a process that will include hearing from Marianne. Moving forward, that is what I want to focus on, advocate for, and work toward. And it may mean travelling to Chicago to support Marianne, just as my friend Kate and I travelled to New Hampshire in January to work with her and her campaign.

I close with words from Marianne Williamson herself. First is a statement she released in response to today’s news of President Biden’s exiting from the presidential race. Second is an excerpt from a statement she issued yesterday calling for Biden to step aside and for an open convention.

I want to take a moment to express my gratitude and respect to President Biden. He reached what had to have been an extremely difficult decision, but he did what is best for his party and his country. Clearly in his heart he shares the goal of the many millions of Americans who wish to see Democrats defeat Donald Trump in November.

The nomination of a new Democratic candidate must be opened to a genuinely democratic process at an open convention. No one should simply be anointed to the position of nominee; all candidates must be heard and their agendas explored. Our party’s basic first principle is democracy. We cannot save our democracy without practicing it ourselves.

I look forward to taking my message to the American people, and convincing Democratic delegates, that I am the best candidate to take us to victory in November. Donald Trump has broken the mold, and we must break it too. He has introduced an age of political theatre that cannot be successfully countered by a status quo politician, however good they might be, for we are living in a different kind of moment.

We will inspire the American people with a compelling vision of their improved material conditions should they elect Democrats in November. My proposed policy prescriptions dismantle the matrix of corporate tyranny that now limits the economic opportunities of a majority of Americans.The Democratic party must recommit to our most important first principle: an unequivocal advocacy for the working people of the United States.

We will not bend to the economic royalists who have ripped apart America’s social safety net and caused such suffering to so many people. We will reform the economy. We will save the planet. And we will wage peace. That is my message, and with it we will win.

Do we need a Democrat to beat Donald Trump? Oh YES! But the soul of the Democratic party does not lie with the Democratic Party machine. I am an FEC registered qualified candidate. I am on the ballot. And despite a media blacklisting of my campaign and the most absurd kinds of character assassination, I received half a million votes in the primary. The only reason I was painted as an “unserious” candidate is because those who did the painting know how serious I am.

My platform would be considered moderate in any other advanced democracy. It includes plans that are supported by a majority of both Republicans as well as Democrats – such as Medicare for All, and tuition-free college and tech school. It speaks to the need for fundamental economic reform to address the extraordinary anxiety among 39 percent of Americans who are skipping meals to pay their rent and 25 percent of Americans who carry medical debt. It speaks to unrigging our economy, and our need for an Economic Bill of Rights. It speaks to the horrors of the addicted and the unjustly imprisoned. It speaks to the needs of our children and the toxicity of our food supply. It speaks to the climate emergency and to our need to wage peace.

I hope my supporters – as well as those who do not necessarily support my agenda yet support the practice of democracy itself, and do not agree with political parties should have the right to obstruct it or manipulate it – will join me in insisting that I have the right to be in any open convention contest going forward. Any debates. Any Town Halls. Any contention whatsoever.

No, I’m not politics as usual. But that is the point.

Neither is Donald Trump . . . which is why I’m the one to beat him.
